An engagement session is such a perfect ice breaker! Not only will you be able to get to know your photographer better but you’ll get to create new memories and share your story through photos with me and all of your loved ones. When you’re researching photographers to book an engagement session, you’re probably doing a lot of reading and looking at amazing photos. Sometimes you’ll know who you want to hire just by how welcoming their personality sounds.

Maybe you made your decision because of all the great reviews, or you’re just truly in love with the quality of their photos. Wouldn’t it be great to spend a little time with them before the actual wedding? Sure, you may have a consultation or two but that’s probably a more professional setting with no camera involved. Having your engagement session gives you the perfect opportunity to see your photographer in action with you. You’ll get a feel for how they’ll pose you, direct you, and help make you comfortable. If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to be prepared and know what to expect before you’re dressed to the nines in front of you most cherish family and friends with a camera following you around.

This is also a good time to let out all your nerves and worries when it comes to being in front of the camera. Consider the first part of your session a trial run so to speak. Your engagement session will be pretty laid back for the most part and your photographer will talk you through it with some prompts or poses that will help your photos come out great. Not everyone feels comfortable in front of a camera and that’s okay. Everyone is not a model. Your photographer will be fully confident in posing you both in ways that won’t come off as awkward or uncomfortable in your photos. A photographer works with all kinds of people. Their goal is to capture your happiness in a way that looks natural and authentic. Your engagement session can be the practice run to prepare you for the wedding.

Many photographers offer complimentary engagement sessions paired with a selection of their wedding photography collections. This is a great way to save in the long run. If you’ve already decided on most of the details of your wedding and have narrowed down your photographer options, be sure to check if you’d be able to have an engagement session with your wedding photos. Usually, your engagement photos can be used for you Save The Date reminders to share with your wedding’s guests. Your photographer may have some templates of their own or might even work closely with a stationer who could create a beautiful invitation with your photos. You can probably find other template choices on Etsy or elsewhere online, just remember that this form of use is included in your photography agreement.
